Imposter Syndrome as a creative.
In Season 1, Episode 11, we explore a common challenge that many creatives and women in business face: Imposter Syndrome. This nagging feeling of self-doubt can cast a shadow over even our greatest accomplishments, leaving us questioning our abilities. Whether you're an artist, small business owner, or professional, this one's for you!
What is Imposter Syndrome?
Imposter syndrome is that persistent doubt about your skills or accomplishments, making you feel like a fraud despite evidence to the contrary. You may wonder if you really know what you’re doing, if you have enough experience, or if others will think you’re not qualified for your role. These feelings are often tied to perfectionism, fear of failure, and comparing oneself to others.
Psychologists Pauline Rose Clance and Suzanne Imes introduced the concept in 1978, initially coining it “Imposter Phenomenon.” Their study focused on high-achieving women who, despite their success, felt they were deceiving others about their true abilities. They found that even when women achieved academic and professional success, they often believed they weren’t genuinely bright, convincing themselves they had simply fooled everyone around them. This concept has since evolved into “imposter syndrome” and expanded beyond gender, affecting professionals across industries and stages of their careers.
Why Does Imposter Syndrome Happen?
Imposter syndrome can stem from various social and personal factors:
Gender Inequality
In traditionally male-dominated fields, women often feel like outsiders, even if they are performing exceptionally well. They may face internal and external pressures that make them question their capabilities. The reality of constantly being compared to male colleagues or predecessors can heighten these feelings of inadequacy.Socio-Economic Background
Those from humble beginnings or families that do not value higher education or certain career paths might feel unworthy of their achievements. If family or friends don’t support their career choices or success, they may struggle with self-worth, leading to imposter syndrome.Social Norms
Breaking away from traditional nine-to-five jobs or choosing creative careers can cause creatives to feel inadequate when society tells them they must have formal qualifications or years of experience. Many creatives, myself included, have faced moments where people questioned or dismissed our career paths, planting seeds of doubt that can linger even after years of success.
My Own Experience with Imposter Syndrome
When I first considered launching this podcast, imposter syndrome almost stopped me in my tracks. I felt too young and too inexperienced, believing I needed a decade of experience before anyone would take me seriously. I was caught in a cycle of comparison and self-doubt, influenced by the traditional education and career systems that place value on degrees, accolades, and long-term industry experience.
Fast forward a few years—I broke away from that cycle, forged my own path, and built this podcast. Through building my confidence step by step, I learned to back myself, grow in my craft, and trust my abilities.
Strategies to Combat Imposter Syndrome
Overcoming imposter syndrome is possible. While up to 70% of people may experience it at some point, there are practical ways to manage and move past it:
Identify Your Triggers
Recognize the specific situations or thoughts that trigger feelings of inadequacy. Are you surrounding yourself with positive influences? Are you comparing yourself to others, or are you worried about not meeting perfectionist standards? Interrupt the cycle by identifying and understanding these triggers.Surround Yourself with Positivity
Lean into positive influences and distance yourself from negative energy. If certain relationships or environments drain your energy or bring self-doubt, consider stepping back. This doesn’t make you a bad person—it’s about protecting your energy and confidence.Change the Way You Speak About Yourself
Pay attention to your language when you describe your work. Instead of underselling your talents, own them. Rather than calling your business a “side hustle,” confidently say, “I am a photographer,” or “I am a creative business owner.” This small shift can have a significant impact on how you see yourself and your work.Upskill to Boost Your Confidence
If you’re struggling with feelings of inadequacy, seek opportunities to enhance your skills. Whether it's through a business coach, an online course, or a masterclass, investing in your professional growth can strengthen your confidence and expertise.Practice Affirmations and Positive Self-Talk
Research shows that what we say to ourselves shapes our self-perception. Remind yourself daily of your strengths and achievements: “I am successful,” “I am talented,” or “I am doing what I love.” Stand in front of a mirror, look yourself in the eye, and acknowledge your worth.Celebrate Your Accomplishments
Society often encourages us to downplay our achievements, but it’s crucial to celebrate your successes, big and small. Don’t attribute your wins to luck or fate; recognize the hard work, talent, and perseverance that got you there.Set Big Goals and Visualize Your Success
Don’t shy away from ambitious goals. Write them down, visualize achieving them, and map out the steps needed to get there. Confidence doesn’t only come from experience—it grows through taking risks and embracing new challenges.
Moving Forward with Confidence
Imposter syndrome doesn’t have to hold you back. Understanding its origins and learning how to manage it can empower you to move forward with confidence. Remember, your talents are unique, and you have every right to celebrate and own your success.
